Depression is very different from simply being unhappy. When we are unhappy we can acknowledge that we are sad about something in our lives, or in the lives of people close to us, but gradually the feeling affects us less, and we may be comforted and live normally, in spite of a heavy heart.

With depression, this is not so. The sufferer is unable to adjust to painful feelings, so he switches them off and becomes emotionally dead. Unfortunately, the good feelings which balance his mood are also turned off, so it is difficult or impossible to comfort him.

Many people go through years of only being half-alive, not realising they are suffering from a treatable illness. If your finger became numb and you could not use it, you would rush to the doctor to find the cause of the trouble. Why put up with numb feelings? Depression is often so sneaky: it creeps up on you, anaesthetising your feelings little by little until your lack of emotions hardly registers and you accept your grey world as normal.

Therapy can help you to heal from depression. Although this may be scary, it is also exciting, because you will start to feel good feelings again. This is the start of your recovery. One young man described it like this: ‘It was as though I had undergone surgery and been under anaesthetic for years. As I started to come out of the depression, my wound started to throb, but at least I was now awake enough to believe people when they told me the throbbing would eventually go, and I would feel like myself again.’

Depression can be caused by different factors such as:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Death of someone you felt you should have loved
  • Divorce
  • Loss of relationship
  • Physical illness
  • Disability
  • Stress at work
  • Poverty
  • Retirement
  • Poor housing
  • Taking care of the elderly
  • Taking care of the sick
  • Addictions
  • Spiritual problems
  • Exams
  • Children leaving home
  • Learning difficulties
  • Heavy physical work
  • Working long hours
  • Poor working environment
  • Working on deadlines
  • Constant travel
  • Too much responsibility
  • Being unhappy about your appearance
  • Being worried about your sexuality
  • Fear of being raped or mugged
  • Relatives moving away
  • Promotion
  • Getting old
  • Growing up

My aim is to help you recover from any of these issues so you can move out of depression and experience life in a fulfilled way.
